Filing a False Document charges in Rhode Island

- (1) that the defendant knowingly gave to a agent, employee, servant in public or private employ, or public official, a receipt, account or other document;
- (2) that the person to whom the receipt, account or document had an interest in that receipt, account or document;
- (3) that the receipt, account or document contained a false, defective or erroneous statement;
- (4) that the false or erroneous statement related to an important particular; and
- (5) that the defendant knew that the false, defective or erroneous statement would mislead the person to whom it was given.
Potential punishment if convicted of filing a false document
Under Rhode Island criminal law, a conviction for Filing a False Document is a misdemeanor for which a convicted offender faces up to one year in jail or fined not more than $1,000. This penalty may be found at Rhode Island General Laws, Section 11-18-1.
