Providence Man’s Simple Assault Charges Dismissed After Apology and Donation
Criminal Charges:
Man charged in Rhode Island District Court (6th Division, Providence County) for:
- Simple Assault, in violation of RIGL § 11-5-3
- Resisting Arrest, in violation of RIGL § 12-7-10
- Obstructing a Police Officer in Execution of Duty, in violation of RIGL § 11-32-1
Case Overview:
Providence Police responded to a disturbance outside a local strip club. Upon arrival, they encountered two men who were ejected from the establishment due to their levels of intoxication. The bartenders refused to serve the men any longer, prompting them to become disorderly inside the club. Bouncers removed the men without incident, but they continued their disturbance outside on the premises. Police attempted to physically move one of the men away from the building. His friend intervened, fearing for the man’s safety. In so doing, he had a physical altercation with police, leading to his own arrest for Simple Assault, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing a Police Officer in Execution of Duty. The man was charged in Rhode Island District Court (6th Division). He hired Rhode Island Criminal Defense Lawyer, John L. Calcagni III, to defend him in this matter.
Case Result: Dismissed
Attorney Calcagni successfully negotiated with prosecutors to dismiss this case upon the man making a $200 charitable donation and authoring a letter of apology to the arresting officer.
