- Multiple Counts of Shoplifting, in violation of R.I.G.L. § 11-41-20
City, State, County and Court:
Warwick, Rhode Island, Kent County
Rhode Island District Court (3rd Division)
Case Overview:
Warwick Police received a report from a Target Store of a woman who had been captured of video surveillance shoplifting on multiple occasions. One time she was observed concealing merchandise on her person and leaving the store without rendering payment. On another occasion, she concealed certain items on her person, but paid for some items, before leaving the store. On another occasion, she attempted to switch price tags to lower the amount necessary for payment. Police identified the woman and obtained a warrant for her arrest. She retained Rhode Island Criminal Defense Lawyer, John L. Calcagni III, to defend her in this matter.
Case Result: Dismissed and Sealed
Attorney Calcagni first surrendered the woman to the police station to have the warrant removed, and to receive service of a summons to appear in Rhode Island District Court (3rd Division). He then appeared with the woman for an arraignment where she entered a not guilty plea to the charged offense. Attorney Calcagni then negotiated the dismissal of the case on the woman’s behalf in exchange for her payment of restitution and completion of community service. The woman successfully fulfilled these conditions, resulting in the dismissal of her case and multiple shoplifting charges. The matter has since been sealed, removing it from public record and leaving her with a clean criminal history.
