Bail Granted for First-Degree Sexual Assault Case in Johnston, RI
Criminal Charges:
Man charged in Rhode Island Superior Court (Providence County) for:
- First Degree Sexual Assault, in violation of RIGL § 11-37-2
Case Overview:
A man was accused by his wife of First-Degree Sexual Assault. The couple met via an online dating site, whereby females from abroad are seeking American husbands. She came to the United States on a visa but did not have citizenship. The man married the woman in Las Vegas within weeks of meeting. He also arranged to bring her mother to the United States from Ukraine, their country of origin. Soon after marriage, the woman began acting strangely. She refused intimacy with her husband. The man investigated his wife’s activities and learned she was engaged in conduct he attributed to prostitution. She was traveling to other cities without him and apparently using the internet to communicate with multiple strange men. He also discovered that the woman, upon meeting new men, would steal their identities and credit card information, presumably to commit fraud. When the man confronted his new wife about his discoveries and cancelled her mother’s travel arrangements, the woman called police and cried rape. This prompted Johnston Police to investigate the man for First Degree Sexual Assault. Soon after, a grand jury issued an indictment against him. At his arraignment, the Court ordered that he remain held without bail. He retained Rhode Island Sex Assault Defense Lawyer, John L. Calcagni III.
Case Result: Bail Granted.
In advance of the man’s bail hearing, Attorney Calcagni and his team shared discoveries by a private investigator of the woman’s nefarious activities. Based on these disclosures, Attorney Calcagni ultimately convinced the prosecutors to agree to the man’s release on surety bail.
