United States District Court for the District of Connecticut
Case Overview:
Federal authorities conducted a long-term investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine in the District of Connecticut and elsewhere. The investigation relied on the work of confidential information and the execution of a search warrant at a man’s home. Inside they discovered approximately 200 grams of methamphetamine. The man admitted to both using and distributing the drug during a post-arrest interview. He was charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine in United States District Court for the District of Connecticut for his unlawful drug dealing activities. In response, he retained Federal Criminal Defense Lawyer, John L. Calcagni III, to defend him in this matter.
Case Result: 70 Months in Prison, Followed by Supervised Release.
Attorney Calcagni successfully persuaded the Court to release his client on bail. Attorney Calcagni also successfully defeated two bail violations by the man for illicit drug use and failure to comply with court-ordered drug treatment, as monitored by U.S. Probation. Following the third violation of this nature, the Court revoked the man’s bail and ordered him into pretrial detention. After reviewing the evidence and assessing the strength of the case, Attorney Calcagni negotiated the terms of a plea agreement with the government. The man faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years or 60 months, and a maximum potential punishment of 40 years or imprisonment. At sentencing, over the government’s objection, Attorney Calcagni persuaded the Court to impose a sentence of 70 months of incarceration, followed by a period supervised release.
